I thought I'd put as my first blog entry a note I posted on my facebook at the beginning of the year. Enjoy!
res·o·lu·tion
noun
1. a formal expression of opinion or intention made, usually after voting, by a formal organization, a legislature, a club, or other group. Compare concurrent resolution, joint resolution. 2. a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something. 3. the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc. 4. the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose. 5. the act or process of resolving or separating into constituent or elementary parts.
When I hear the word resolution I think of the answer to a problem, fixing something that's wrong... resolving an issue. This intrigued me as to why people call them new year resolutions. I suppose some of them are to fix what we see as problems in our lives: diet, excercise, quit smoking, drink less, things of that nature. But what about the resolutions like, visit another country, or help someone in need, or some other type of bucket list like goal.
So I looked up the definition. The two entries in bold stood out to me. The first, a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something. I think all of us who make resolutions start out this way, determined to follow thru. Yet, most people fizzle out thru the year and return to old habits. Depending on your goal, it's hard to break old habits and you have to really be committed, really want it. Which brings me to the second entry, the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose. Resolute. I never thought of a new year's resolution like that, which is the origin of the word. If you want your goals to succeed for the new year you of course have to be resolute. It's a mental state, a belief almost that these things are already true. You have to want them with all that you are. Like Walt Disney said, "When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably." This I believe is the recipie for making your resolutions reality. Resolved.
So here is what is resolute in my mind for this new year:
1. Get better about what I eat. I admit I've gone lax, especially in the junk food area. I still have not had fast food since May of 2010, and basically no soda since last December... just a few sips or drinks here and there. So my aim is to get back on track with that. I'm not too worried, as I did it before and I can do it again.
2. Excercise more. This is one I know will be the hardest for me. I need to set myself a firm routine and follow it. This year though, I feel more resolute than ever. It will be hard because I'm the girl who'd rather curl up with a book and sit around than go out and do something but I'm hoping to change that.
3. Write a page a day. This one will take some adjusting too. If I can get a routine going and make it a habit then I should be good. I keep thinking in my head how, "One day when I'm a published author..." well one day is never gonna come if I don't make the time to sit down and write. So... this is me making "one day" today.
4.Buy a new car. This one may seem silly but I want a new one. One that doesn't run on a cork. One that will take me to Disneyland should I get the whim so I don't have to rely on someone else to take me.
5. Go to England. I want to go so badly. The only place I've ever been outside of the US is to Mexico. :/ Not too thrilling in my mind. I want to start to travel to be able to appreciate other cultures, and also learn to not take being an American for granted. I've always liked just about anything English and so this is a big big big resolution for me this year. I will make it a reality. I'm going to save my little pennies and hopefully by about September or so, I'll be able to make it. Even if I have to go by myself, I will not let this one pass me by without a fight.
So there you have it, my resolutions, the things I have resolved to accomplish in a year's time. I have hope, and I am determined, at the moment. I feel these are all acheivable, rather easily too, so I just pray for the consistency and resolve to stick with it. How about you?
So if you're wondering how well I'm doing on these resolutions here's a bit of a run down. I've been eating better, and I've been to the gym more the past week than I was in the past month and also take a power walk at work every day. I have been writing every day, though not always a full page. It's January 13th and so I should have 13 pages. I have about ten. I just have to get back in the practice and I know I'll catch up soon. New car and go to England will take a considerable amount of more time, however, I am saving my pennies diligently.
